Ain't No More To Say

I was getting a little worried about the "Idol" ladies losing their collective mojo, but dang if they didn't surprise me last night with some sassy musical stylings!  Thanks much, Top 8 Divas-to-be.  Truth be told, three were hot, three were not and two were not quite but almost.  Let's run it down, shall we?  In the "not so much" category, Katie, the young lass, continued to suffer a personality disorder of "Sybil"-like proportions.  (First ever Sally Field nod.)
Who was she this week? Kelly Clarkson-lite.   "Breakaway" spilled forth all gloomy, and once again, the judges asked, "What kind of artist are you?"  Clearly, she doesn't know, no thanks to the four of 'em f'n' her up weekly.  Katelyn, she of the gorgeous punim and lustrous curls, tried to "Feel the Earth Move," a la Carole King, and moved her likelihood of going home up a notch.  As Ellen said, so eloquently, "It wasn't a 'wow' song, but you're adorable."  High praise-lite.  And speaking of gloomy, Paige gave us the saddest and heaviest "Smile" on account of Mr. Michael Jackson.  She was thinking about him and it just got to her.  That is so unfortunate.  Or as Kara put it, the wrong song choice!  (Double dang!)

In the "almost got it right" category:  Lacy, with her lovely, "very cool," in judgespeak, take on Brandi Carlile's "The Story."  Sayeth Simon:  She's back on the right path.  Her best performance to date!  Is that enough to keep her on Idol turf?  Methinks:  Hell, maybe.  Her vocals aren't the strongest, but yes, I say she can stay.  Lilly went quirky with Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces."  Randy and Ellen loved it.  Kara found it contemporary.  Simon called it brave. SJG found it DULL.

And, in the -- SPOILER ALERT!  SPORTS REFERENCE! -- "hit it out of the park" arena, we have SJG's fav, Crystal, singing Tracy Chapman's "Gimme One Reason" with so much depth and soul, it was a thing of beauty, people. I done clapped along!  The judges went ape-sheeet.  Siobhan sang a haunting "House of the Rising Sun," (is there any other kind?) going all acapella on us.  Gave me a sweet Martha Davis of the Motels vibe.  It moved Ellen, but Simon didn't dig it.  He found it weird.  Didi channeled Stevie Nicks with "Rhiannon."  Risky!  Man, this could've been an epic disaster.  But the judges lauded her.  Ellen summed it up thusly:  "Yes, indeedy, Didi."

Give a listen, tell me what you think.

  1. I replayed Crystal's song three times in a row last night (luv the DVR)! It was off the hook and WAY off my tingle meter! But did you notice how she kind of sat down wearily afterward to hear the judges' notes? Like maybe her blood sugar was running low. I worry for her....

  2. She's low-energy, I agree. She'll need some Elliot Yamin-type dental fixin' too. But totally brill, as the Brits might say.

  3. I think she might be my favorite of the girls this year.
