One Tough Cookie

Barely out of the hospital, Crystal Bowersox once again won ladies night on "A.I." with "Long As I Can See The Light," by Creedence Clearwater. She promised to bring it to church, and dang, if she didn't deliver. Girlfriend's got such "raw, natural talent," in the words of Ellen, that there's no telling where she could land, chart-wise, long as she manages that testy diabetes situation. Simon tried to retract his subway comment and called her a "serious artist."  All I can add to that is:  Duh!

There were other joyful performances: Lilly Scott, the definition of cool, sang Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and slayed them judges. Siobhan Magnes, "a funny little thing," according to Simon, sang some Aretha ("Think") with quirky style. I'm liking her; very glad the mohawk phase ended. Katelyn Epperly took a turn at the piano with Cold Play's "The Scientist." Ellen labeled it a snoozefest, Kara pretty much loved it, and Simon gave her half-praise. It was corny, said the Brit. What did Randy say?  Something with either "dude" or "dawg."

Didi did a so-so "Lean On Me," Katie went with "Put Your Records On" and didn't get where the judges wanted her to go... wherever that is. Kara lectured Paige, dismissing her "Walk Away" as too perky. Well, excuse me! Kara, co-authoress of the song, wanted more anger. Note to Kara: Get over yourself, honey. I dug it. Lacey B. sang "Kiss Me," the song Kara had suggested last week, and it wasn't half-bad. But then, it's wasn't half-great, either. Go win! Michelle, so gorgeous, it's criminal, sang a Creed song that felt a tad "nails on the chalkboard." Didn't do it for me, people. I'm just sayin'. You disagree? Lemme know. Add a sassy comment. I beg you! Did Haeley really need to go all Miley Cyrus on us, and strain her vocals on "The Climb"? No, no, and, no. Oh, but she went there and as a result, tonight she might be all goney, along with Paige, Jermaine and John.

  1. Excuse me, but "A.I." bores me to tears. (Please don't end our friendship cuz of this!)I'll grant you, the few minutes I watched one day I heard some damn good singing!

  2. I love it. I can't help myself. This season is off to a slow start, I admit.

  3. I have to say, I wasn't nearly as impressed by Lilly as everyone else. Crystal was SO much better, imho. Overall, however, the season's a loser as far as live performances are concerned. My only hope is that some of these nervous Nellie amateurs have Rocky-like ascensions to glory in the next couple weeks.

  4. I hear ya. It's pretty much a bust so far. I'm a glutton for punishment!
