You may or may not have read about it in the Temple Beth Bow Wow bulletin. Then again, you may have discontinued your membership to this particular canine synagogue. I'm not here to judge, but seriously, what's wrong with you? Either way, here's the big news. Today is Lucky Starr's Bark Mitzvah. That's right, bitches. Today my brother John's adorable rescue pup turns 13. This in itself is a miracle. Lucky earned his name many moons ago, when a nice gal performed a death-defying mitzvah. Zooming down the freeway, she spotted this sweet little boychick running for his life. So she did something altogether crazy. She opened her car door, risking bodily harm and then some, scooped him up and brought him to the animal shelter.
Meanwhile, my friend Leslie knew my brother was looking for a new dog after his beloved Penny had passed away. She heard about Lucky via the animal rescue grapevine, told me, I told my brother, and he rushed over to the shelter. Lucky was a street dog, accustomed to sipping water from the gutter and nibbling whatever food he could find. It took a while for John to teach him proper doggy etiquette. Getting him to eat dog food and drink water from a bowl became an ordeal, but ultimately, the team of John and Lucky grew stronger daily.
Fast forward to today, when Lucky gets called to the makeshift bima to become a Bark Mitzvah. Naturally, we're all kvelling. It's not often you get to hear a dog read from the Torah, without benefit of a rabbi or cantor. We'll all be there to cheer him on, the devoted members of our petite but wonderful mishpocha, along with some dear friends who adore Lucky as much as we do. Just between us, I'm beyond thrilled that the dress code calls for casual. The SJG can only spend so much time prepping for all the important events in life, and Lucky's big day is right up there.
