"Sheep's heart, liver, lungs and stomach." "Gross," was all I could muster. A few hours later, an update: "It tasted really good, like chopped liver." "Tell Grandma. Maybe she'll whip up a batch when you get home." "It's banned in the U.S." "You're learning so much on this trip." "I really am."
Haggis in not specifically banned in the US, but it's illegal to sell any animal lung as human food. Sheep lung is a small but required part of the recipe.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the stomach is used a casing to cook the mixture, but is not eaten. Haggis is basically a kind of sausage. If you're not grossed out by eating liverwurst (or chopped liver as mentioned above), you shouldn't be bothered by haggis.
